International Market Boxes: Peace Market
Our third International Market Box from earlier this summer included a visit to Peace Market, an African goods store selling frozen meats, vegetables, packaged pantry staples and drinks. Peace Market is located at 1154 E 26th St and can also be found on Facebook as Peace Market African Store.
Owner Yakaremye Omari left Burundi at age 4 and spent the next 18 years in a refugee camp in Tanzania. He moved to Erie in June of 2007 and founded Peace Market in 2015 to serve the African communities of Erie's east side. From his market he recommends purchasing the frozen grated cassava root, which can be cooked and served with fish and vegetables.
The items featured in this box included Ground Peanuts for seasoning meat dishes and stews, Fufu mix, Ginger beer, Kalaba, Maggi Shrimp Bouillon, and Coconut Candies.
To order our last box, head to gonelocalerie.com/market by this Sunday at 11:59pm.
Special thanks to Erie Arts & Culture and Erie Downtown Partnership for making this project possible.
